Joining The Mission

At Valor Metal Detecting, our mission is to preserve history and support veterans through the engaging hobby of metal detecting. We believe in fostering a community centered around trust, ethics, and respect for our heritage and those who served. Here’s how we ensure that every participant aligns with our values and contributes positively to our community.

Our Principles and Policies:

By emphasizing these principles, Valor Metal Detecting strives to create a community where history is respected, veterans are supported, and ethical standards are upheld. Together, we explore our past, honor those who served, and preserve our shared heritage for future generations. -Alex Logan-

1. Clear Membership Process:
We prioritize trust and ethical standards in our membership process. Prospective members undergo a thorough vetting process that includes demonstrating commitment to ethical metal detecting practices and respect for property owners' rules. We believe in building relationships based on trust and mutual respect.

2. Valor Unit Leaders:
Introducing our Valor Unit Leaders—mentors and guides who exemplify our values. They educate new participants on best practices, help obtain permissions, and ensure compliance with our policies. These leaders play a crucial role in nurturing a responsible and knowledgeable community.

3. Educational Focus:
We are dedicated to training and educating participants beyond the basics of metal detecting. Our programs include research methods, land reading skills, and effective communication with property owners. Success with Valor means not only finding artifacts but also engaging responsibly with history and landowners.

3. Participant Status:
New participants are welcomed as "Associates" as they begin their journey with Valor. This status reflects their involvement while acknowledging that full membership requires demonstrating commitment to our principles over time.

4. Liability and Responsibility:
Participants are informed of their responsibilities regarding safety, property damage, and adherence to policies. While Valor Metal Detecting provides education and tools, participants understand that they are accountable for their actions and decisions.

5. Policy Compliance:
Our policies are designed to maintain positive relationships with the community and landowners. Participants are expected to adhere to these guidelines, which ensure our collective success and reputation.

6. Therapeutic Benefits:
We recognize the potential therapeutic benefits of metal detecting, particularly for veterans managing PTSD or related challenges. While Valor provides support and education, it's important to note that we are not a substitute for professional therapy or medical advice.

Our Programs and Initiatives:

1. Valor Satellite Groups – Building Connections Nationwide
Valor Metal Detecting is committed to expanding its reach by establishing veteran-led satellite groups in communities across the country. These groups provide veterans with a structured opportunity to learn metal detecting, conduct historical research, and participate in group outings with like-minded individuals.

How to Start a Satellite Group:

  • Reach out to Valor Metal Detecting to express your interest.

  • Provide valid proof of service (DD-214, Military ID, or equivalent).

  • Complete a brief orientation to understand Valor’s mission, detecting ethics, and group guidelines.

  • Gain ongoing support and resources from the Valor team, including training materials and mentorship.

2. Mentorship Program – Learn, Lead, Connect
Our Mentorship Program connects experienced detectorists with veterans who are new to the field, offering guidance in equipment use, research techniques, artifact identification, and group leadership.

3. Partnership with Metal Detectors for Veterans – Expanding Support
Valor Metal Detecting is proud to collaborate with Metal Detectors for Veterans, a nonprofit dedicated to providing detecting gear and support to disabled veterans. This partnership enhances our ability to equip veterans with the tools they need to participate in detecting outings and group events.

To qualify for equipment through this partnership:

  • Must provide valid proof of service.

  • Must complete an application outlining interest in metal detecting and commitment to participating in Valor programs.

  • Veterans may be paired with a mentor to guide them in equipment use and detecting techniques.

Social Media Support – Share Your Knowledge and Connect

Not every veteran may be able to join us in person, but you can still be a vital part of our mission through social media. If you’re an experienced detectorist and want to support fellow veterans, here’s how you can help:

  • Relic Identification: Share your expertise by helping newer members identify artifacts they uncover. Your knowledge can provide valuable insights and historical context.

  • Advice and How-Tos: Offer detecting tips, equipment recommendations, and best practices for veterans who are just getting started.

  • Community Support: Engage with our social media channels, share your finds, and encourage new detectorists to stay motivated and connected.

  • Mentorship Online: While you may not be physically present, you can still guide and advise through our online platforms. Help new members navigate research methods, reading land, and detecting responsibly.

Your experience and willingness to share can make a tremendous impact on veterans seeking support and connection through metal detecting.

By emphasizing these principles, Valor Metal Detecting strives to create a community where history is respected, veterans are supported, and ethical standards are upheld. Together, we explore our past, honor those who served, and preserve our shared heritage for future generations.
